#3 :: WEIRD AND WONDERFUL WINTER

Frankly I find Christmas weird. So many archaic traditions that while completely defy logical explanation are still followed without question. Add on top of that the madness of the holiday shopping experience and I have to question the reasoning behind it all. How did we get here? Then again the season makes you feel so good, when its all said and done its worth it. This months songs attempt to capture that weird but wonderful sense of the season. Not to worry, no actual Christmas songs appear.

Song: Cough Coughing .................. Artist: Menomena
These guys developed their own software so they could practice, cut up and then relearn to play their songs. And it's unbelievably good to boot! From Portland of course. You could buy a cd by this band!

Song: Floral Design in a Straight Line .................. Artist: Single Frame
Great frenetic post punk that actually utilizes a keyboard as an integral element in an original sound. Most bands use it as "hip" icing. Here it's the cake. This stuff is for sale!

Song: Just Don't Know .................. Artist: El Guapo
"Hefe, would you say I have a plethora of pinatas? Yes El Gaupo!" Regardless this is a great song. Give them money and they send you the whole CD!

Song: The Second Line .................. Artist: Clinic
This guys voice is mesmerizing. Plus this song just sounds so obvious...like has always existed. Thats a hard thing to do. For sale by owner!

Song: The Moon .................. Artist: Microphones
Not really all that weird of a song but the guy behind the Microphones has a reputation that more than makes up for it. Anyway this song is really pretty and reminds me of winter. This starving artist could be your child!

Song: Celebrity Sanctum.................. Artist: Dogs Die in Hot Cars
A new band that sounds like the Talking Heads. What it lacks in originality it makes up for in quality. Hard to find a better band to imitate. Help 'em out you cheap bum!

Song: Panda .................. Artist: Dungen
This band is swirly, psychedelic and Swedish. Another gem. Your not cool if you don't buy it!

Song: Love Squats .................. Artist: Wicked Farleys
This is one of my all time favorite completely unknown bands. Saw them play in a warehouse once and have been hooked ever since. They are the embodyment of weird and wonderful. This CD could be your new best friend!

Song: Hot Shot .................. Artist: Need New Body
These guys are a bunch of crazy mofos. I am finding it hard to describe. Its good to breakdance alone to, in the dark. You deserve a new CD!

Song: I Was Born a Unicorn .................. Artist: Unicorns
This song is ingeniously self referential (wink wink) and like nothing else. Who would name themselves the Unicorns and then sing about how cool it is to be Unicorns? If you like buy it!
