#8 :: SEPTEMBER SUBVERTS THE SLUMBER OF SUMMER
So the Mixtape is back. Originally it was not going to be anything like this but given the unbelievable events of the past week I couldn't help for it to end up feeling reactionary. No songs directly about New Orleans or anything crass like that; just some things that either say or sound in a way that feels relevant, whether that be anger, disbelief or sadness.

Of course if you haven't given money to the cause, I urge you to do what you can to help the people that not only suffered a terrible natural disaster but also appear to be seriously let down by our leaders and bureaucracy. The good people at the red cross need your dollars to get the survivors what they need to survive. Deaths are predicted to go as high as 10,000. On a catastrophic scale this is worse than 9/11. Its going to cost more to fix and its shockwaves are going to remain for a long time.
Oh yeah and I just realized I actually got some comments from people on some previous mixes. So thanks Jo and Skatelip for confirming that I am not speaking into a void. I didn't realize that the comments were only available to blogger users. Now they are open to everyone. Comment if it feels good to do so, you "human paraquat"!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Song: Helicopter
Artist: M. Ward
This guys whole aesthetic is so beautiful. The sound is so familiar like old AM radio folk yet it feels so fresh and unprecedented. Its warm to say the least and the lyrics are eerily prescient.
Link O Commerce!
Song: 7/4 (Shoreline)
Artist: Broken Social Scene
Here be a new and as yet unreleased track from the BSS new album due out in the fall. I find their stuff so there and not there. If that makes any sense. Its as solid as stone yet unembraceable..
Link O Commerce!
Song: No Satisfaction
Artist: Black Mountian
This folky collective feels very mountainy, but maybe I am just etymologically projecting. Any way it has a great driving beat and real sense of restlessness.
Link O Commerce!
Song: Details of the War
Artist: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
So these guys are the next big thing. They are as yet unsigned yet getting the royal press treatment. Not undeservedly in my opinion. I think they are great and will fight any body who says otherwise.
Link O Commerce!
Song: The Twenty-Second Century
Artist: Say Hi to Your Mom.
I just stumbled across this band randomly and ended liking what I heard. I don't think they are getting much attention. Maybe its the stupid name. Regardless I highly recommend them.
Link O Commerce!
Song: Epilogue
Artist: Boy in Static
At this point the mix is straddling its folky beginning and its more mature static-drenched middle. This is one of those truly great songs that you could swear you have heard before because you can't imagine nobody having written it before.
Link O Commerce!
Song: Don't Save Us from the Flames
Artist: M83
I don't know whether this is "electronic" or rock or whatever. Its effing transcendent though. Play this one really loud.
Link O Commerce!
Song: Its a Hard World Sometimes for Little Things
Artist: Des Ark
So this is my first great local band discovery here in Raleigh. A bluesy female fronted Unwound. Only guitar and drums but they both wail and restrain themselves enough to make it work. I have listened to this record maybe 5o times and it never gets old. Really. I can't recommend them enough. So buy it already!
Link O Commerce!
Song: Cacophony
Artist: Karate
This is one of the great mid nineties emo/indie bands that just keep getting better. Great inventive song structures, real emotion, zero placating.
Link O Commerce!
Song: Leaders
Artist: Archer Prewitt
Here is a great George Harrison-esque ditty that is asking all the right questions. Where are the leaders? I fear the social contract between the leaders and the lead has been broken.
Link O Commerce!
Song: All These Governors
Artist: The Evens
Throwing in a bonus song to make up for the Mixtape's extended hiatus. Your still my friend right? Anyway Ian McKay is back, a little gentler but no less scathing.
