#33 The Only Relative Thing About The Truth Is Our Opinion Of It.

You know, the "new" can be such pain in the ass. I mean the new year has come and gone, as well as the highly anticipated inauguration, and the collective wisdom was that "change" was supposed be in our veins and such. But change is, as they say, god damn hard. For example, its now the end of January, and my one resolution, to start exercising, is pretty much DOA. Part of me thinks that I can't force it, and just have to wait until I truly come to the heartfelt realization that it is my best interest. Part of me knows that's a bunch of bull.

In a way, it's similar to my unending struggle to keep up with the endless stream of new music that keeps finding itself in my digital collective. For the longest time now, I have collected music far faster than I consume it. I valiantly try to keep up and for the most part I could sustain my head above water. Despite it all, there is an embarrassing amount of music that I have collected, or as one might claim "own", that I have never even listened to. How sad.

And it's getting worse lately. More and more my job has become less and less the kind of thing where I can get away with popping on the headphones and remain unbothered for several hours at a time. So now I am positively drowning. Last years "best of" lists were, for the first time in a long while, full of things I had heard about but didn't have the time to listen to. These are thoughts that do not sit well with me.

Anyway, I digress. Part of what has kept me doing these mixes is the fact that it forces me to sit down for several hours and absorb all the music I have recently (and not so recently) accumulated onto my ever shrinking digital storage otherworld. I know it sounds weird that I have to "force" myself to do one of my favorite things, but it's a happy force. A needed self imposed discipline to make time for the important things.

Long story short is that sometimes you have to force yourself to do the things that are the best for you. Isn't that screwed up?

Since a majority of the most recent mixes have focused largely on older music, I am dedicating the first mix of the new year to only the "new" in all its forms. I am not promising you'll only hear things you hadn't before, but these are all things relatively new to me. Regardless they are quickly becoming some of my favorite "new" things.

It looks like the link is going to your last mix. Could you please update? Thanks. I love this series and I can completely relate to your post. So often I am embarrassed to find great songs in my iTunes that I acquired over a year ago but never took the time to listen to due to my job/family life. I trust your mixes and make a point of listening through each of them. I find they are a great reminder to catch up on things I've missed, and a great introduction to music I haven't been exposed to yet.

Hey cousin -

The beauty of music is that it can always wait for you to be discovered. Unlike the just about everything in today's society, it doesn't have to be consumed immediately!

Agree with DaveMurr. Often times I'll find myself really into a "new" band or album and start talking it up only to find the rest of the world "discovered" the band two years ago and is already over them.
